ABM PEW REFLECTIONS – Sunday December 4
The words of the prophet Isaiah spoke to an Israel looking to the arrival of one upon whom the Spirit of the LORD would rest. This ‘shoot from the stump of Jesse’ would be wise and powerful, righteous and faithful and his coming would involve all the nations. What is God’s word saying to you today? Paul reminds us that what was written in the past was so that we might have hope. May we ponder afresh the word of God.

ABM PEW REFLECTIONS: Sunday November 6
It is easy to be confused and overwhelmed by a world that seems out of control. But the future of all things is not in our hands, but in God’s. Isaiah reminded Israel and he reminds us that the LORD will create a new heaven and a new earth, the past will be forgotten, there will be great rejoicing and the sound of weeping and crying shall be no more. There will be life as it is truly meant to be. Come Lord Jesus, come and renew all things.
Pray that the Lord of peace himself will give us peace in every way and be with us every day.

ABM PEW REFLECTIONS: Sunday November 6
The older Israelites who had returned from the Exile in ancient Babylon remembered the glory of Solomon’s temple, incomparable in splendour to that crafted under the younger Zerubbabel.  This is echoed by the Psalmist who wrote: ‘one generation will declare your works to the next.’ Our families and churches should be places where all ages share with one another the works of God in their lives, for while families can be close, God is closer and he is always near to all who call upon him.
Thank God that he is righteous in all his ways and gracious in all his acts.

ABM PEW REFLECTIONS: Sunday October 30
Saint Paul, writing to the Thessalonians makes mention of their faith, love for one another and perseverance under difficult circumstances. This was the ancient world so reputation was passed on by word of mouth. What a testimony it was. What is your church known for?  May God count us worthy of his calling so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in us and may we continue to pray for one another and give thanks to God.

            Church Cleaning
CHURCH CLEANING
It is a truism that you only notice cleaning when it hasn’t been done. Our church is no exception, and part of the reason this place you enter on a Sunday morning is a beautiful ‘spirit filled’ space is because a few people have given of their time on a regular basis to keep it looking welcoming and cared for.
For various reasons two of our regular cleaners can no longer continue in this role.
Due to some recent unexpected bills (e.g. Council rates on the vicarage doubling from $4000pa to $8000pa due to a site revaluation) and some repair work on the church roof (large holes that were letting in water), it is Parish Council’s preference and hope that cleaning can be undertaken by the church community rather than having to pay for it.
The church needs to be cleaned once a fortnight by one person or two people working together and it takes approximately two hours (depending on the individual’s ‘speediness’). The aim is that each cleaner would only be rostered on about once every three months.
At this stage several members of Parish Council have ‘put up their hands’ but it would be appreciated if the wider church community took some ownership of this as well.
Please let Lorraine know if you would be able to offer some time.

ABM PEW REFLECTIONS – Sunday July 31
God said to him, ‘You fool’. – Strong language.  Then, Paul, writing to the Colossians, is trying to get through to these new Christians, that they have to make choices and get their priorities right. ‘Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth’. Centuries earlier, the Psalmist wrote ‘Some went astray in the wilderness and in the desert: and found no path to an inhabited city;’ ’Whoever is wise, let them observe these things: and consider the loving-kindness of the Lord.’  It is easy to stray into foolish behaviour. It takes time, patience and prayer not to be a fool, but to know ‘Christ in God’.
Pray to know Jesus Christ in God.
Give thanks for the Church of North India, remembering especially today their ministry in a predominantly non-Christian context.

ABM PEW REFLECTIONS – Sunday July 17
‘To make the word of God fully known’. Here, Paul is still writing to the Colossians, emphasising that they have much to know and learn about Jesus, ‘the image of the invisible God’. This is, in effect, what Jesus told Martha, when she complained to him that her sister, Mary, was just sitting down listening to what he was saying. Amos, the prophet had to listen to what the Lord was saying. We too have to sit at the Lord’s feet and listen to what he has to say - specifically to us.

ABM PEW REFLECTIONS – Sunday July 10
‘So that you may lead lives worthy of the Lord …as you bear fruit in every good work.’ Paul writes this to the young church community at Collossae, reflecting the words of the Psalmist ‘Rescue the poor and needy: and save them from the hands of the wicked’.  This speaks to our much more established church communities. We are to share with the young, struggling, poor and often persecuted churches. Jesus’ story of the travelling Samaritan illustrates that loving and caring for our neighbour means loving and supporting those in need - both far away as well as those near at hand.

ABM PEW REFLECTIONS: May 29 – The Second Sunday after Pentecost
It was a long walk to the top of Mt Carmel, but Elijah knew it was necessary. He firstly accused the assembly of double standards – worshipping God and also Baal and told them to make up their minds. Today, too, so many have double standards. What/who do they actually worship? – Money when they need it? Fame when they want it? God when all else fails? But Elijah more than worshipped God. He had such a strong faith, so strong that he set up what seemed an impossibility. Is our faith as strong as that?

An Excerpt From ‘THE ANGLICAN PRIMATE’S EASTER MESSAGE’
“……………………The darkness of human evil is all around, as always, but it is confronted in the crucifixion of Jesus on Good Friday, and overcome in his resurrection on Easter Day.
This biblical truth, which we celebrate week by week but especially at Easter, invites us not to lose courage in the face of human cruelty or to lose hope on account of the apparent triumph of evil and despair.
What is the resurrection promise of Easter Day? – God’s love will endure and continue, no matter what. Christians look to Jesus’ rising from the dead as not just an historic action but as the promise of his presence with us today – even in the worst of circumstances.
Believing and understanding this is the key to the peace of God that surpasses all understanding: the key to Easter.”          Archbishop Philip Freier

ABM PEW REFLECTIONS: April 17 – The Fourth Sunday of Easter
In the modern world, so many won’t take the step of believing in Jesus until the question, similar to this one is answered to their satisfaction, plainly and in scientific terms.  “If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.”  Jesus has answered this with “The works that I do in my Father’s name testify to me”.  We need to answer the modern doubters in the same way.  In Jesus’ time the doubters were there with him and could clearly see what he was doing, and yet did not believe.  How much harder it is for us, in this day and age to show the works of Jesus to the doubters.  The problem is that they are not always easy to see and there are none so blind as those who do not wish to see.  Let us find ways to bring the modern miracles of Jesus to those who are blind to them.

“It’s been a busy few months for us here at Anglicare Victoria, with increasing demand for our services over the holidays and the back to school period. Over the course of 2015 we placed almost 3,000 children with foster and kinship carers, provided counselling services to 2,173 people and supported over 6,000 vulnerable families - all thanks to the help of people like you.
Your support is crucial in our mission to transform the futures of disadvantaged Victorian children, young people and families. Everything we do is to prevent, protect and empower these people.”

At its February meeting the Parish Council decided that HTPM will support the ABM Project 'Water, Sanitation and Hygiene in Vanuatu' by raising $1500 during 2016. Fund raising ideas for the project are welcome.

PLANS FOR THE VICARAGE

Deidre Gallagher (Diocesan Property Officer) attended Holy Trinity on Sunday March 20 and addressed the parish with the latest developments for the long term leasing of the Vicarage. A long term lease will provide financial security to the parish but maintenance work will need to be carried out before a lease can be finalised.

ABM PEW REFLECTIONS: April 10 – The Second Sunday of Easter
Psalm 30.2 says, ‘O Lord my God, I cried to you: and you have made me whole’.
Yes, we too do this. It is usually part of our prayer life, both privately and in public worship – prayers for those who are sick, undergoing surgery etc. We sometimes expect that God will immediately take away the pain, cure the disease or remove the impediment to our being able to live as we want to. But God can make us whole in many different ways.
Sometimes it is through the skills and talents that he has given to the medical people. Sometimes it is through his Peace that helps us accept ourselves as we are. Sometimes we don’t realise we have been made whole because we are not looking at ourselves through God’s eyes.
Remember Jesus said, ‘Your faith has made you whole.’
(e.g. Luke 17.19)
• Pray for all who need God’s healing hand, that they may accept the healing he gives, even if it is not as expected.

MEEGAN AND DAVID’S WEDDING – Easter Day 2016
Heartfelt thanks to everyone who gave so much time and energy to assist with the practical tasks involved with Meegan and David’s wedding and reception last Sunday. It was also lovely to have the bride doing the Easter readings! Photos are now on the website.

ABM PEW REFLECTIONS: April 3 – The Second Sunday of Easter
The disciples locked themselves in the upper room because they were afraid of the Jews. How many times do we lock ourselves away in a confined space because we are afraid of those around us – afraid that if we say, act or in any way demonstrate our Christian beliefs and actions they ‘might’ not like it and might react negatively. This happens in our workplace, our recreation areas and even our own homes. We can hide from our fellows, but not Jesus – he will still come to us and bring his peace – a peace that is beyond our understanding.
• Pray that we might have the courage to stand in the open and in our words and actions proclaim Jesus Christ as our Lord.

ABM PEW REFLECTIONS:
March 27 – Easter Day Sometimes, news can be too good to be true and we react with fear, disbelief and shock. The news of the resurrection of Christ brought these feelings to his apostles, but we know that in time those rumours of his resurrection would concretise into flesh and blood experience of this new Adam appearing in the garden and bringing good news of peace with him. From this resurrection, these meetings, and those experiences we have been given the light of the gospel as well passed down through the ages, and we are called to bring it to others.
• Pray that in the light of the resurrection, we and all Christians might be strengthened to bring Jesus to those who don’t know him;
• Give thanks for the great gift of Resurrection in our lives.

LENT 2016
Lent is a penitential season in preparation for the Festival of Easter.  The order of the Eucharistic Liturgy is changed in Lent. There are no Alleluias, the Gloria is not said or sung, and instead the Trisagion is said.  The Preparation, the Words of Scripture the Prayer of Approach, the Confession and Absolution are all said in the centre of the Liturgy. The Second Sentences are used where there is an option, and the anthems and the Invitation to Communion on Page 146 are used.  There are no flowers in Lent and the liturgical colour is blue or purple.  Lent is a more meditative and reflective season and the liturgy tries to encourage that.

MOTHERING SUNDAY – THE FOURTH SUNDAY IN LENT
Next Sunday - March 6, is traditionally observed as Mothering Sunday.  Gifts of Simnel Cake and flower posies will be blessed and distributed. Offers of Flower Posies would be appreciated.

ABM – PEW REFLECTIONS: Sunday February 7
This Sunday is the last Sunday of Epiphany, which is a season that celebrates and rejoices in the fact that our God is a God not just for a specific people but for everyone, and that we are called to bring that God into the world. It’s fitting that, while we all ponder what we are going to give up during Lent that we hear that great exhortation from Paul in 2 Corinthians to act with great boldness because we have such a hope in Jesus! Strengthened by what we have learned in this season of Epiphany, we continue on our mission in the world having seen the glory of God and showing it to everyone, not veiling our faces or our hearts.

ABM – PEW REFLECTIONS: Sunday January 31
Sometimes the truth that God tells us through his word can be difficult for us to bear. Jesus told a difficult truth to the Jews in the Synagogue in his hometown. Deep within his message was the truth that God’s love is for everyone and not just for the Jews – demonstrated by his acts of healing and mercy to gentiles in difficult times. Today we can rest assured that, as surely as God formed us in the womb and knew us, he has a love for us that breaks down all barriers.

ASH WEDNESDAY CLIMATE JUSTICE FORUM
The Ash Wednesday Climate Justice Forum is a gathering of Anglicans from throughout Australia and our Region to discuss how the Anglican Church is responding to the challenges of climate change.

Parts of the Anglican Church are already confronting people forced to leave their homes, food and water shortages, and increased risk from natural disasters. Other parts of the church are working to increase awareness and understanding of climate change in order to build consensus for a shared response.

The Ash Wednesday Climate Justice Forum will be facilitated by the Anglican Alliance. Outcomes from the forum will be directed to the 2016 meeting of the Anglican Consultative Council.

ABM PEW REFLECTIONS – Sunday January 10,2016
In Baptism, Christ knits us all together into his body and in doing that we become a part of him here on earth. The Christian life is one in which we are called to follow Christ in everything that we do, and it’s our belief that in us God will recognise Christ. When the Holy Spirit descends upon Jesus in his baptism by John the Baptist, the voice comes from heaven saying, ‘You are my son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased’. In our baptisms as well as in our lives we can expect that God says much the same, that we are his beloved children and with us he is pleased.

ARCHBISHOP PHILIP FREIER’S 2015 CHRISTMAS MESSAGE
“Christmas this year, as so often, will be celebrated in the dark shadow of violence and fear, from terrorism to domestic violence. This is no surprise; it has always been so. Jesus, too, was born into a world of cruelty, violence and exploitation.
He knew first-hand what the worst of human anger was like, and how irrational human cruelty can be.
And yet, by His coming into the world, Jesus brings us hope. Born as a baby, Jesus brings the divine message that being human is full of possibilities for good. To be human is a gift from God: it is a gift to be used for life.
The baby born in a stable appears so weak, so far from prestige and power. But in Jesus’ life we see life and its possibilities.
Possibilities of:
Broken relationships reconciled; Barriers of race, power, religion and wealth overcome; Self-interest turned to generosity; Hatreds transformed to love.
Jesus was not ignorant of the darkness of human hatred. We see it all around us in the news, on social media and, sadly, all too often we experience it in our own lives. But Jesus brings life. He told His disciples, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”
That contrast has been important for nearly 2000 years. Jesus, in taking human life as a baby, shows us how to be fully human and fully alive: alive to each other and alive to God who gives us life. Therefore, the Christian way should be one of love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness.
Every person who follows Jesus and looks to his way of life, of peace, tilts the balance away from hatred. This Christmas, I invite you to pause, to consider Jesus’ way of peace, his healing of people in body, mind and spirit, his teaching of compassion and justice, his bringing of hope.
Jesus’ birth is the opportunity to look at our own lives, and discover the seeds of hope again.”
